An Exhibition of works by the 2012/3 Ranger Station Art Gallery

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE S I O B H Á N H U M S T O N

Paintings/drawings, mixed-media sculpture & photography

*‘EXPLORING TOTEM’ is the continuation of a body or work started in July 2012 at an Artist in Residence program in New York. Her works on panel and large scale drawings on paper involve the use of abstracted aspects of nature now coupled with various man-made elements including cars, houses, tractors and so on. The use of the word ‘totem’ is the artist’s respectful reference to the vertically situated totem pole of the first nations people, and also to the symbols and ideology of what she sees may be of conflicting value in our current society. Also exhibited will be forty digitally manipulated photographs of nature turned on its side; sculptures made with wood, fabric and natural elements; several small scale sculptural pieces in the ‘DivertReclaimRebuild Project’. In total, over sixty pieces completed during her tenure as Artist in Residence will be on exhibit.

*SIOBHAN HUMSTON is a Vancouver based artist, trained in Ontario and Ireland, whose work is inspired by varying aspects of nature. The 2012 eviction from her live/work studio by the City of Vancouver had an irreversible impact on her life and work. With over 60 solo and group exhibitions on her CV and working in five different studios since that time, this will be her third solo exhibition since April 2012. She received a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant to attend the Artist in Residence program at Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, New York and will continue her tenure at the Ranger Station until August 2013. Her work will be seem in the Fraser Valley Biennale this summer and as featured artist at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Sales and Rental Showroom.

*ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM at RANGER STATION ART GALLERY Built in 1948 on the shores of Harrison Lake, the Ranger Station served the community as an outpost for BC Forestry Ministry until 1978. In 1983 the village of Harrison Hot Springs allowed the Kent Harrison Arts Council to take over the space to house the area’s first public gallery. At this time the second floor was made into a two bedroom apartment with studio and began to provide a series of artists with both a living and work space. In 2005, the Artist in Residence program was formalized from a renewable one year contract to an annual ‘call for artists’ open to Canadians internationally. Part of the AiR contract involves acting as gallery administrator and weekend assistant.

I recently discovered this short video of my temporary studio in Vancouver (February 2012)and paintings that are now at www.herringerkissgallery.com in Calgary, Alberta or www.partsgallery.ca in Toronto, Ontario or have been sold. It is a little overview of the paintings I was working on or had just finished at the time.

First of all, hello to my Icelandic visitors! It is such an odd thing to be able to see behind the scenes on one’s blog but only so much…and as Iceland has long been on my ‘must visit’ list, I extend an especially warm virtual hug!

Back in November there was a little filming that took place in order to make a video about my current Artist in Residence post at the amazing, beautiful Ranger Station Art Gallery as facilitated by equally beautiful and amazing volunteers at the Kent Harrison Arts Council. One of these is the particularly wonderful people is Rebecca. Her daughter Emma put in the time, effort and talent to make this video. It is laughable that they were concerned that there may not be enough Talking. Never at a loss for words, I am reminded of the old Irish adage, there is no such thing as a short version! So, here it is: the long version…I only wish I was able to express more of my gratitude for having this opportunity and to speak of the uniqueness and value of this particular AiR program!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8YUO8-pN9Y

Thanks Emma! And thanks to Rory for always letting me stay in the live room at Orchid Studio…especially the two nights previous to this sleep deprived interview!

So, months later, I am here at the Ranger Station Art Gallery as their Artist in Residence for the year. From this past September to next August I have use of the whole second floor of what was formally the Ranger Station and I am loving it. Soaking it up. Feeling entirely lucky! And now, while working on loads of small projects that have been percolating for ages, I am happily engaged in continuing a new body of work that I began this summer. I spent this past July in the Artist in Residence program at Byrdcliffe, outside of Woodstock, New York where I was able to begin developing new ideas. I’ll updating the blog with that work, but for now, here’s a quick peek at my current work. (watercolour paper is a natural off white & colouration of photo taken with iphone; better photos soon)

Special thanks to Sarah Gee (www.sarahgeeart.com) for writing the essay, to Wendy for the photographic documenting (www.wendydphotography.com), to Gregory for giving me a home & support during the great eviction-quake of 2011, to Mira for letting me inhabit her art beauty home from where I write this. To Chadwick, who made Tuesdays in the studio something to look forward to: ceramic therapy, the meeting of minds and hearts. And especially to Rory, for wrapping my heart in the warm blanket of his friendship, with words, hugs, music, quiet and action. Thank you all for taking the time to consider art. In such, you consider beauty & life…
